America the Beautiful
by Siddharth Kulkarni
(Written on October 21, 2001 at age 13 after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center by terrorists.)
This is a poem to my country, America,
who has defended freedom
countless times
in your shallow valleys
and near your highest peaks,
I was raised
as a whole nation cries
you still stand strong
as a symbol of hope
and freedom
every man, woman, and child,
from the farmer in his field,
to the clerk in his store,
to the child in the ghetto,
your people are united
although your tallest
buildings may burn
and your proudest
cities may weep
you still are the
land of the free
and the home of the brave
